Fire has always been the alchemist's most powerful instrument of transformation. In this experience, you will work with calcination — the ancient process of using controlled heat to unlock colours hidden within raw materials that yield nothing to the cold. Through fire, pale yellow ochre transmutes to burnt sienna. Through fire, the same earth that lines a Pennine riverbank becomes the deep, warm tone that warmed the shadows in Old Master paintings for four centuries.
You will understand, through your own hands, why medieval alchemists believed fire did not destroy — it revealed. Changing base materials such as ochres and umbers into a sublime brilliance in this crucible of creation, reminiscent of the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.
