This experience is about creating beautifully rich colours from beneath our feet. We will forage, harvest, and refine them using natural principles to make natural colours. Let us delve deep into the earth’s embrace, where time is inscribed in ochres, umbers, and mineral pigments formed millions of years ago.
Ochres: A range of yellows and oranges from alluvial clay laid down as sediment in ancient river estuaries and lakes and at the foot of tropical coral reefs many hundreds of feet high.
The fossilised dunes around Appleby and much of Cumbria can be transformed into red and brown ochres.
Umbers: We will learn how to transform molehills and clays from the surrounding fells into rich, dark umbers.
Green Earths: A few miles away, Westmorland slate, mined and quarried at Honister, is prized for its unique greenish grey colour and exported worldwide.
All of these colours are living relics, each echoing the enduring tales of ancient landscapes and lost civilisations, connecting you to the historical significance of the materials.
We then turn these natural pigments into the world's finest watercolours and paints that you can take home.
Four Experiences: Natural Earths | Calcining | Blues and Greens | Alchemy Master

The six-year-old was so engaged, and the 13-year-old daughter enjoyed it; it was such a fascinating afternoon. We were all fascinated.

This was an excellent workshop led by Mark, who is passionate about Colour and pigment and effortlessly conveys that passion.
Mark himself is hugely easygoing, friendly, and a breeze to listen to, making it easy to take it all in. Brilliant.

I so enjoyed my day, I learned so much about the history, alchemy and processes involved in making pigments from local rocks and earth. Your step-by-step instructions through art practices will spur me on. I'd highly recommend one of your workshops and a visit to your shop to anyone curious about the colour around all around us.
- Fiona, Edinburgh.
The visit to the colour maker's house in Appleby offered the opportunity to discover something new (the creation of foraged pigment). It was time well spent in the company of an interesting maker. We also enjoyed looking around the house and learning about its history.
