To the north west of the Lakes is the mountain of Skiddaw. This particular umber is extracted from the multitude of molehills to be found on the common below Skiddaw.
When the umber is burnt or calcined over an open fire it smells like boiled cabbage becoming an intense warm chromatic black with reddish overtones. It is one of my favorite colours.
Suitable in all mediums and like most natural umbers is opaque and lightfast.
The umber is second on the sixth row of the painted swatch.
Each vial contains approximately 10g of refined pigment and measures 22 x 75mm. The vials also make a fine gift or souvenir for anybody that is an artist.
